The heavy sleeper's wake-up kit: 7 things that actually work

You've slept through phone alarms. Multiple alarms. An alarm across the room on max volume. Your brain has learned to ignore sound — so the fix isn't a louder sound. It's a kit: things that make waking up mandatory instead of optional. Here's what actually works, in the order we'd buy it.

Updated August 2026 · Yes, this is AlarmPop's blog and our own app is #1 — we explain exactly why, and the other six aren't ours. Some product links may earn us a commission at no cost to you.

1. An alarm app iOS can't silence — with a task to dismiss

Start with the alarm itself, because most heavy sleepers are fighting with a broken weapon. Until iOS 26, every third-party alarm app rang as a notification — mutable by Silent mode, suppressible by Focus, killable by a restart. We wrote up why here.

AlarmPop is built on AlarmKit, Apple's new system-alarm pipeline: it rings full-screen through Silent mode and every Focus, the siren escalates the longer you stall, hitting Stop just arms a backup alarm — and it won't shut up until you beat a mission: math, typing, shaking, singing on pitch, or re-photographing your bathroom sink. iOS 26.1+, 3-day free trial, then paid (no ads, no free tier, no data collection).

2. Alarmy — the category veteran (and the Android pick)

Alarmy invented the mission alarm and has a decade of polish: math missions, photo missions, squats, a huge sound library, and a free ad-supported tier. If you're on Android, this is your answer — AlarmKit is iOS-only, so nothing on Android rings at true system level, and Alarmy's workarounds are the best in class. On iPhone, its alarms are still notification-based (our honest head-to-head), but it remains the most complete app in the category and the one we'd install second.

3. A bed-shaker alarm clock

The nuclear option, beloved by the deaf and hard-of-hearing community for decades and by heavy sleepers who've discovered it since: a bedside clock with a vibration puck that goes under your mattress. The Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb is the cult classic — a 113 dB dual siren plus a shaker that physically moves the bed. Sound can be ignored; a shaking mattress is much harder to sleep through. About $40.

4. A vibrating wake-up wearable

If you share a bed, the shaker wakes both of you — a wrist wearable wakes only you. Purpose-built silent-alarm wristbands, or simply an Apple Watch with haptic alarms, wake you through your skin instead of your ears. Wearable makers claim wake rates around 97–99% for wrist vibration on heavy sleepers, and it matches what we hear from users: skin doesn't habituate to buzzing the way ears habituate to sirens.

5. A sunrise lamp

Light is the strongest lever on your circadian clock. A sunrise alarm (Hatch Restore, Philips SmartSleep) ramps from dark to full brightness over 30 minutes before your alarm time, so the alarm lands on a brain that's already half-surfaced instead of one in deep sleep. It won't get a true heavy sleeper up on its own — pair it with #1 — but it makes the wake-up dramatically less violent. $50–170.

6. A charger on the other side of the room

Free, and it doubles the power of everything above: charge your phone across the room. Now the mission alarm (#1) starts with your feet on the floor before you can even attempt it. If your charger is within arm's reach, your half-asleep brain will negotiate. It always negotiates. Any $10 long-cable charger works.

7. A consistent wake time (the boring one that makes the rest optional)

Every sleep researcher says the same thing: the single biggest fix for brutal wake-ups is waking at the same time every day, weekends included. Your body starts prepping cortisol and temperature before a predictable alarm — which is why Saturday sleep-ins make Monday feel like assault. The kit above gets you through the transition; consistency is what eventually makes 6:30 feel like 8:00 did.
